New Health Insurance Hearing Aid Legislation
If you’ve been concerned about paying for hearing aids, you can rest easy—a new Washington state law will require insurance to provide up to $6,000 in coverage.
Rep. Tina Orwall, (D) Des Moines, who sponsored the bill, credits 8-year-old Hugo Esterhay’s testimony to the House of Representatives with making the law a reality.
Under the law, non-grandfathered large group health plans issued or reissued in 2024 must provide coverage for hearing instruments, including bone-conduction hearing devices. The law does not include over-the-counter hearing aids.
Coverage must include the hearing instrument, the initial assessment, fitting, adjustment, auditory training, and ear molds.
